Who was St. Benedict?

Today, on July 11, we celebrate the feast of St. Benedict of Nursia, the Patron Saint of Europe.

St. Benedict was born in Italy around 480ad. As a young man, he went to Rome to study but found it hard to spend time with God in the city. So, he became a hermit. Soon he became a leader of some monks, but they later decided that his rules were too strict. They even tried to murder him but when he blessed the poisoned drink, the glass broke. He left them and founded many monasteries based on his rules of work, prayer, and penance.

St. Benedict of Nursia, pray for us!
